How Byrna Started
The Byrna is modeled after a traditional firearm and shoots a pepper projectile. In addition, Byrna Technologies has developed a non lethal shotgun shell, which can be used in any shotgun in combination with regular lethal shotgun shells. According to Bryan Ganz, CEO, and President of Byrna Technologies, this offers people who own shotguns the option to use non lethal rounds first and if there is still a threat to their safety they can discharge a standard shotgun shell.
Ganz developed the Byrna in order to provide people with alternatives to using deadly force in the event they need to protect themselves and their families. He says most people will experience trigger hesitancy in the event they have to use a firearm because most gun owners do not actually want to have to shoot anyone. In addition to avoiding trigger hesitancy, Ganz aims to provide a solution to the growing gun violence epidemic in the United States.
He says if more people use non lethal weapons like the Byrna it can begin to have a significant impact on the amount of gun related casualties in the country every year. Currently, the Byrna has been supplied to over 300 law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal level. Last year, Byrna Technologies accumulated over $50 million in sales, which shows more people are looking for alternatives to deadly force.
When purchasing a Byrna, there are no background checks, licenses or required permits to carry one. The Byrna is legal in all 50 states, which makes it ideal for people traveling across state lines because they won’t have to worry about whether or not it is legal to carry the Byrna. However, there are some cities such as San Francisco and New York City where carrying a non lethal weapon like a Byrna is not permitted..
Ganz says Byrna Technologies has received pushback from people on both the left and right of the political aisles in the United States. He says this comes from the right in the form of people believing that the company wants to promote gun control and infringe on people’s Second Amendment rights. As a gun owner, Ganz says this couldn’t be further from the truth as he is just trying to provide one of the solutions to ending the gun violence epidemic in the country.
On the left of the political aisle, Ganz says people accuse Byrna Technologies of promoting gun culture and further contributing to gun violence. Ganz only wants to provide people with an alternative to using deadly force and give people who aren’t comfortable carrying a firearm a means to effectively defend themselves.
“Not everyone wants to carry a gun, and in most situations in which lethal force was used, it could have been avoided. With the Byrna, people can feel safe and have a viable and alternative means to using a firearm in the event they have to defend themselves.” says Ganz. “We need to have common sense solutions to ending the wave of gun violence sweeping the country, and with the Byrna we’re not trying to infringe on anyone’s Second Amendment rights or invoke policy towards gun legislation. We are simply providing a way for people to avoid the use of lethal force.”
