Unfortunately, natural disasters are a way of life for many Americans. I am here in Iowa, near the epicenter of some of the worst floods that this region has seen in decades, and as we are right in the middle of hurricane season on the East Coast and in the gulf, and with wildfires heating up out on the West Coast this is a good time to make sure that you are prepared in the case of a disaster in your region.
When we think of emergency preparedness, most of us think about our food and water supply and if we have a generator in case power goes out. Unfortunately, one of the most overlooked aspects of emergency preparedness is your safety and security.
During a natural disaster tensions run high and people start resorting to things that they would never do under normal circumstances and of course we’ve all seen the looting that takes place during some of these events.
And to make matters worse, in a state of emergency first responders are stretched to the absolute limit dealing with that disaster and it’s likely that if you have to call police for help, it could take an extended period of time for them to get to you; which is why you have to be your own first responder!
