Trying to decide which Byrna launcher is best for you? The right choice depends on how you plan to use it. Some buyers want a compact launcher for personal protection, while others prioritize power, capacity, home defense, or maximum performance.
Today, the Byrna lineup includes several different launcher configurations, including the Byrna SD, Byrna LE, Byrna CL, Byrna CL-XL, and Byrna LE Short Barrel. Each serves a different purpose.
This guide compares the major options to help you find the best Byrna launcher for your needs.

What Is a Byrna Launcher?
A Byrna launcher is a CO2-powered less-lethal launcher designed to fire compatible projectiles for personal protection, training, and home defense. Depending on the launcher and applicable laws, compatible ammunition can include kinetic, training, marking, or chemical-irritant projectiles.
Unlike conventional firearms, Byrna launchers do not use traditional firearm ammunition. However, laws governing possession, carry, shipping, and certain projectile types can vary by location.

What Is the Best Byrna Launcher?
There is no single Byrna launcher that is best for every person. The best model depends on whether you prioritize size, power, capacity, portability, home defense, or everyday readiness.
As a general starting point:
- Byrna SD: a proven all-around option.
- Byrna LE: designed for buyers prioritizing higher performance.
- Byrna CL: compact and easy to carry.
- Byrna CL-XL: compact platform with increased magazine capacity.
- Byrna LE Short Barrel: a more compact LE configuration for buyers who want LE-series performance in a shorter package.
The important question is not simply “Which Byrna is best?” but which Byrna is best for how you intend to use it?
Byrna SD — Proven All-Around Protection
The Byrna SD is one of the most established models in the Byrna lineup. Its combination of size, straightforward operation, available accessories, and broad projectile compatibility makes it a practical starting point for many buyers.
For someone purchasing their first Byrna and wanting a versatile launcher for personal or household protection, the SD remains an important model to compare.
Best for: first-time Byrna buyers, general personal protection, home defense, and buyers wanting a proven platform.
Byrna LE — Higher-Performance Byrna Launcher
The Byrna LE is designed for users who prioritize performance. Compared with the SD, the LE platform offers upgraded performance and features aimed at buyers who want more from a full-size handgun-style Byrna launcher.
The larger format can also make the LE attractive for dedicated home-defense setups where maximum compactness is less important.
Best for: home defense, experienced users, security applications, and buyers prioritizing performance over compact size.
Byrna CL — Compact Byrna Launcher
The Byrna CL takes Byrna in a different direction. It uses a smaller .61-caliber platform designed around portability and everyday readiness.
The CL incorporates Byrna's Pull-Pierce Technology, allowing the CO2 cylinder to remain unpunctured during storage until the launcher is activated. Its smaller dimensions make it especially attractive to people who consider the SD or LE too large for their intended use.
Best for: compact personal protection, portability, smaller hands, commuters, and buyers prioritizing size and ease of carry.
Byrna CL-XL — Compact Size With More Capacity
The Byrna CL-XL expands on the CL platform for buyers who like the compact .61-caliber system but want additional capacity.
This makes the CL-XL particularly interesting for someone deciding between the portability of the CL family and the additional capacity commonly associated with larger defensive platforms.
If these are the two models you are considering, see our Byrna CL vs CL-XL comparison for a more detailed breakdown.
Best for: buyers who want a compact Byrna while prioritizing additional capacity.
Byrna LE Short Barrel — Compact LE-Series Option
The Byrna LE Short Barrel provides another choice for buyers who like the LE platform but prefer a shorter configuration.
It fills an important position between Byrna's compact-focused models and the traditional full-size LE, giving shoppers another size and handling option when comparing Byrna launchers.
Best for: buyers who want an LE-series launcher in a more compact configuration.
Byrna SD vs LE vs CL vs CL-XL: Which Should You Choose?
When comparing Byrna launchers, focus on how the launcher will actually be stored, carried, and used rather than choosing solely from specifications.
Best Byrna Launcher for First-Time Buyers
The Byrna SD is a strong starting point because it provides a proven, versatile platform without requiring buyers to prioritize either maximum compactness or maximum performance.
Best Byrna Launcher for Maximum Performance
For buyers who prioritize the performance of a handgun-style Byrna platform, the Byrna LE should be near the top of the comparison list.
Best Compact Byrna Launcher
The Byrna CL is designed specifically around a smaller footprint. Buyers wanting the same compact platform with additional capacity should compare it directly with the CL-XL.
Best Byrna Launcher for Home Defense
Home-defense buyers may prefer the SD or LE families because portability may be less important than ergonomics, familiarity, capacity, and performance.

Byrna Launcher vs Pepper Spray or Taser
Choosing a Byrna is also different from deciding between other less-lethal self-defense technologies. Pepper spray, conducted-energy devices, stun guns, and projectile launchers operate differently and have different considerations for range, storage, training, and use.
We've created dedicated comparisons for shoppers researching these alternatives:
Are Byrna Launchers Legal?
Byrna launchers are not conventional firearms, but that does not mean every launcher, projectile, carry method, or use is treated identically everywhere. State and local regulations can differ, particularly for chemical-irritant projectiles and public carry.
Before purchasing or carrying one, review our Byrna gun legality guide and verify current laws applicable to your location.

I’m glad to see your break down of the three models. Being LE and retired, this would be for my wife (she is not sure about guns) how much difference is there on discharge of the three models. I live in Wi. So not able to try each model.
